Mukul Nagpaul is an avid runner, currently training for his IRONMAN Triathlon race and also Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2017. He tells FF about his training routine.

My biggest competitor is myself, so my biggest motivation is to become the best version of me. I want to be better than I was yesterday, and I am inspired by my coach Gaurav Makkar, who is 3 times Ironman and Kris Gethin, who has done Ironman, as a hybrid athlete.

There is no comfort in staying at the same place in life

I read a quote once which said that if you don’t have answers to your problems after a 4-hour run, you ain’t getting them.  Being able to talk to myself during my run helps me solve my problems. Also, I get a lot of ideas after a run.

I began running in earnest, 3 months ago

Since June 2017, I have done a variety of runs like Long runs, Intervals, Tempo runs and Fartlek training. Other than running, my training involves a lot of cross training like swimming, cycling, and strength training. I generally start my preparations for a marathon, 12 weeks before the event

For Strength, I generally do 1 upper body, 1 lower body and 2 core workouts in the gym in a week.

For Endurance, I do 1 long run a week

For Speed, I alternate between Tempo runs and Speed Intervals every week

I am preparing for a triathlon so I am swimming and cycling as well throughout the week, so my average weekly training time is between 15 to 20 hours.

Just before Raceday

My biggest concern before a marathon is my hydration level, as I sweat a lot.  So, I have to keep drinking a lot of water. Funnily enough, this makes me uncomfortable during the run!

Aside from issues of hydration, I make sure I load some carbohydrates from the night before. For me, a peanut butter sandwich serves as a great pre and post workout snack.

As far as running gear is concerned, it’s important to run in what is comfortable for you. Just make sure you don’t run in new gear. Try out your run gear beforehand, to ensure you are comfortable in it.
