Krav Maga trainer Kaustav Sehgal tells us why he reaches for a handful of almonds, to boost his practice and energy level. 

All martial arts involve rigorous, energy-intensive training, so you really need to pay attention to your nutrition. “Getting your moves right depends upon high energy and a combination of focus, and skill,” says Krav Maga professional, Kaustav Sehgal.

Like other fitness professionals, he believes in eating 5 meals a day, composed of the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, minerals, proteins, vitamins and supplements. Since energy is in high demand, he sticks to foods guaranteed to provide this. ‘You have to eat the right foods, at the right times,” he says.

Eggs and bananas are his pre-workout favourites

Like others in the fitness business, Kaustav Sehgal says that eating right is all about balance. For the most part, he believes in boosting his nutrition with small, smartly timed meals throughout the day.

Before his workout, he swears by a meal of eggs and bananas. “I keep my pre-workout portion a little light. I just tend to be half full before I workout,”  he says. 

Almonds and protein shake after a workout

After his workout, he replenishes his energy with a protein shake and some almonds. “This combination is my energy filler,” he says. Indeed, he has science on his side. Many studies show that a protein shake, coupled with almonds can speed up muscle recovery.

That’s because these nuts are rich in vitamin E as well as protein, which facilitates muscle recovery. Other useful nutrients in almonds are manganese, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, and tryptophan. In addition, almonds satisfy the appetite, making them an ideal early morning snack.

Ultimately, smart nutrition ensures sustained energy, important for martial arts practitioners. ” Eating right improves your balance, speed, strength and reflexes,” Kaustav concludes.
